Wangka Maya congratulates the Thalanyji people of Onslow on the successful reburial of ancestoral remains last week. The reburial took place on Friday 18th of April and six ancestors were laid to rest back in their homeland. Wangka Maya staff and Committee assisted the WA Museum in the process of restituting these remains from museums and collections around Australia.
A big welcome to Danielle Toon who has elected to spend a week volunteering her services at Wangka Maya! We always welcome the contribution of skilled volunteers at the language centre. Danielle is working on a staff induction kit during her time at the centre. Many thanks for your time and effort, Danielle!!!!

Welcome Philip Swan
Wangka Maya welcomes Philip Swan who will be working with the Nyiyaparli people over the next 9 weeks. The Nyiyaparli people will be recording information and making a documentary about their traditional country. Philip will use the stories told during this activity to find more words for the Nyiyaparli dictionary.

Joint Language Centre Project
Wangka Maya and Irra Wangga Language Centre from the Geraldton region worked together during the month of April to identify Putijarra language speakers in the town of Wiluna.

Wangka Maya is pleased to host a visit by Silvano Fasolo from the Karlkurla Language Centre in the Kalgoorlie region this week. Silvano, the linguist for Karlkurla, is visiting as part of a joint project being undertaken by the two language centres. The project is to look at languages termed 'Western Desert' languages and to work on five of the languages.
While at Wangka Maya, Silvano worked with Sue Hanson on the classification of the languages, the linguistic Toolbox database, resources development and the development of four dictionaries from the Kalgoorlie region due for production in June 2008.
