Media Release 24 April 2007 - Carnarvon Mission Reunion |
Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre hosted the Carnarvon Mission Reunion on Sunday 15th and Monday 16th of April 2007. Original dates were changed because of the sudden loss of a community member.
The working party that organised this event was made up of people from Carnarvon Aboriginal Medical Service, Wangka Maya Link Up and past mission residents. They were very pleased to be the first users of the Carnarvon Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre. Mr Ron Crowe, Ingada elder, gave the Welcome to Country and many people participated in the very moving ceremony. On the Sunday evening Yamatji band Red Ochre came to Carnarvon and played to the 300 strong audience. This alcohol free family event was enjoyed by many people of all ages. Young people at the reunion were encouraged to learn about this important part of West Australian history.

Media Release – 1 May 2007 - The Historical 1967 Referendum |
On the 27th of May 1967, the voters of Australia made dramatic history. On this date, a referendum was held to poll the voters’ opinion about changing racially discriminatory sections of the Australian Constitution. The result was an overwhelming 90.77 per cent vote in favour of these changes.
The Australian Constitution was written in 1900 at a time when Aboriginal people were openly discriminated against because of their race. Outdated colonial attitudes were evident in sections of the Constitution, but it took a further 67 years from the enactment of the Constitution for these sections to be changed.
