BRADSHAW ART of the KIMBERLEY
by Grahame L. Walsh, 2000

Bradshaw Art of the Kimberley

To Eurocentric eyes, an outstanding aspect of the Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) rock art is its sheer beauty. This book, with its many creative and artistic features, is fully up to displaying that beauty.

The inherent difficulty of working with such a quantity and variety of different images is elegantly overcome. The wide landscape pages (35cm x 25cm) are used well with a four column layout but Walsh is never afraid to use variations of up to a full page for an image where appropriate. The diversity of maps, photographs, rock art silhouettes and drawings show a remarkable degree of coherence in being displayed within the text. A creative use of backgrounds mean that the images can stand alone as works of art.

The quality of the photography is superb. The jacquard patterning is effective in enhancing areas of plain text. The tasteful endpapers are enhanced by the design of the section openers. What more can I say?

If you can find a copy of this book it will not be cheap but it is a stylish production. Sell what you must and buy it for its artistic merit.

I see Bradshaw Art of the Kimberley in the same light as I see the Lindisfarne Gospels produced by Eadfrith at Lindisfarne Monastery shortly before 698 CE. For any time, they are 'state of the art'.

Walsh's book is a major work of art directed by, most probably, a single artist. It may lack the hand written insular majuscule script and the great decorated 'carpet' pages of the Gospels but they are represented by image depictions in many forms and the varied textures of the pages. Both books are compositions from the heart.

I await the judgement of the indigenous owners of the art. I look forward to this book being reviewed by a person skilled in the discipline and divorced from the politics of the situation. I stand too close to the subject to make an objective evaluation of the text but I must make one personal bleat: I have never said 'Statistics don't lie'.
